System answers / clarify before installation

FAQ: Before Connecting Pipes

These answers explain the boundaries. Your local authority and qualified installer resolve the site-specific details.

Can I drink water collected from my roof?

Do not assume roof water is safe to drink. It can contain microorganisms and chemicals. A drinking-water application needs source assessment, suitable treatment, verification, maintenance and compliance with local requirements. See the treatment guide.

How large should my rainwater tank be?

Compare seasonal rainfall, effective collection area, losses and the demand you can legally supply. Include dry periods, space, support, overflow and maintenance access. Annual rainfall alone is not enough. Start with the complete system map.

Does a first-flush diverter disinfect rainwater?

No. It diverts some initial runoff and may reduce some contamination, but it does not reliably remove all pathogens or chemicals.

Can kitchen and toilet wastewater enter a greywater system?

Toilet wastewater must not enter a simple greywater system. Kitchen and dishwasher wastewater may be excluded or regulated differently. Confirm locally eligible sources before planning reuse.

Can I store untreated greywater in a rainwater tank?

Do not assume this is acceptable. Untreated greywater can deteriorate rapidly. Storage, treatment and permitted uses need a specifically suitable, locally approved arrangement. Read the reuse boundaries.

Will an ordinary filter make any source safe to drink?

No. Treatment must address identified hazards under specified operating conditions. Verify the exact model's claims and arrange appropriate testing and maintenance.

Why is cross-connection protection essential?

A connection between non-potable and drinking-water systems can contaminate the drinking supply. Labels do not prevent this. A qualified professional must specify approved separation and protection.

Where should tank overflow go?

To an approved drainage route that avoids foundation damage, neighbor flooding, erosion and standing water. Confirm the route with the relevant local authority and designer.

How often should I service the system?

Use manufacturer instructions and local obligations, adjusted for site conditions. Inspect after storms or contamination events, and keep a written service record.

Does the contact worksheet approve a design?

No. It creates a text-only discussion brief locally in your browser. It does not calculate compliance, certify water safety or send a message automatically.
